Tuesday s very rare and strong December tornado in Washington state comes as scientists are learning more than ever about how tornadoes form and why they seem to be growing more powerful. One of those studies says your eyes are deceiving you mdash; tornadoes do n adidas samba ot drop down from the clouds. In fact, it s likely the opposite, according to a new study presented at the American Geophysical Union conference.Despite the thousands of scientists and storm chasers descending on Tornado Alley every spring, the exact mechanics on how tornadoes form is still not perfectly known. Even something as seemingly elementary as, does the funnel grow from ground or drop from the clouds, is still in debate. For this resea adidas samba rch, Dr. Jana Houser and her team intercepted four tornadoes. Shooting a radar beam through the depth of the column, from cloud and ground, allows them to pinpoint where the rotation shows up first. The most notable intercept was the infamous and deadly tornado that struck El Reno, Oklahoma, in May 2013. On that day a very large contingent of scientists and storm chasers were right in the storm s path, providing an abundance of eyewitness as well as photographic, video and technological evidence. It s rare but there are an increasing number of children experiencing a dangerous inflammatory syndrome likely linked to coronavirus.More than 100 possible cases have shown up in the New York City area of what doctors are calling pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome. At least two young boys and an 18-year-old girl have died as a result of the syndrome.Cases are popping up in other U.S. cities and in Europe as well. The symptoms are similar to another condition called Kawasaki disease that is triggered by infections. Emails obtained by CBS News show the nominee, San Diego billionaire Doug Manchester, was asked by the RNC to donate half a million dollars as his confirmation in the Senate hung in the balance, chief investigative correspondent Jim Axelrod reports. When Hurricane Dorian ravaged the Bahamas in September, Manchester wanted to help. So the San Diego real estate developer, who prefers the nickname Papa Doug, loaded up his private jet with supplies and headed for the hard-hit Caribbean country where he owned a home mdash; and hoped to soon be serving as U.S. ambassador.A Mr. Trump supporter, Manchester donated $1 million to Mr. Trump s inauguration fund. WASHINGTON -- The pilot of a U.S. Navy EP-3 surveillance plane took evasive action to avoid possible collision with a Chinese fighter jet during an encounter off the Korean peninsula, a Pentagon spokesman said Monday. The spok nike dunk esman, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, said two Chinese J-10 fighters intercepted the U.S. plane Sunday in international airspace between the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea, in an area he described as west of the Korean peninsula. Davis said one of the Chinese planes approached at a high rate of speed from beneath the American plane, then slowed and pulled up, prompting the EP-3 pilot to take evasive action. He called the Chinese pilot s action unsafe. This is uncharacteristic of the normal safe behavior we see from the Chinese military, Davis said. There are intercepts that occur in international airspace regularly, and the vast majority of them are conducted in a safe manner. This was the exception, not the norm. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Matt Knight, a spokesman for U.S. Pacific Fleet in Hawaii, said the American plane was on a routine mission. While we are still investigating the incident, initial reports from the U.S. aircrew characterized the intercept as stanley cups unsafe, Knight said in an email response to questions. Students for Trump announced this week that President Trump is planning to speak later this month at their convention in Phoenix on June 23, marking his second visit to the state since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. But that visit comes as COVID-19 cases have climbed in recent days across the battleground state, with local health officials urging residents to avoid the very type of large indoor gatherings the president s visit will likely involve. The nearly 2.3 million people incarcerated across America are especially vulnerable to the coronavirus outbreak, activists warn, and the virus has already made its way behind bars. The close proximity of inmates, coupled with inadequate treatment, can cause diseases to spread quickly inside prisons, where resources like soap, cleaning supplies and warm water can be hard to come by.The disease, COVID-19, has sickened tens of thousands of Americans, including 21 inmates and 12 staffers at New York City jails, the largest outbreak behind barsto date. The FBI is investigating a possible pawn shop theft ring involving Amazon delivery drivers and thousands of packages containing stolen merchandize sent across the country. The years-long organized theft ring generated more than $10 million, the FBI claims in a July search warrant recently unsealed. News of the warrant was first reported by the Associated Press. Two Washington state pawn shops allegedly bought products from shoplifters who primarily steal from brick-and-mortar retail stores, including Home Depot, Lowes, Fred Meyer, the document says. The thieves also paid cash for stolen property from delivery drivers, who stole from Amazon and from drug addicts and users, FBI agent Ariana Kroshinsky alleges in the search warrant granted by a judge in the Western District of Washington. The stolen items were then believed to have been stored in Kent, Washington or in Amazon fulfillment centers elsewhere in the country. The value of property involved in this case has reached well into the millions of dollars since stanley nz this criminal activity began, Kroshinsky said. A judge has rejected OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma s bankruptcy settlement of thousands of lawsuits over the opioid epidemic because of a provision that would protectmembers of the Sackler familyfrom facing litigation of their own.U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon in New York found that federal bankruptcy law does not give the bankruptcy judge who had accepted the plan the authority to grant that kind of release for people who are not declaring bankruptcy themselves. In a statement Thursday night, the company said that it would appeal the ruling and at the same time try to forge another plan that its creditors will agree to. The conservative parental rights group Moms for Liberty plans to spend more than $3 million on a multi-state advertising blitz to increase its membership and engage voters before November, following through on a pledge it made last year to become more politically active across the country in 2024.Yet the considerable investment comes with a twist for a group that has previously said its focus was on loca stanley cup l school board races: It will specifically target voters in Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina and Wisconsin, four states that are among the most important presidential battlegrounds this fall, and some of its initial advertising directly criticizes the Biden administration.
