Reversal film was much in use, and supplied slides snapped during vacations and at family events. Slide projectors were also widely used in educational and other institutional settings. The example pictured is a Kodak Carousel model 4400, dating from the mid-1980s. This glass transmits visible wavelengths but absorbs infrared. Light passes through the transparent slide and lens, and the resulting image is enlarged and projected onto a perpendicular flat screen so the audience can view its reflection. This form of projection also avoids the audience interrupting the light stream by casting their shadows on the projection or by bumping into the projector.Martin, Germany; ceased production Slide projectors get smarter all the time. ThanksIs there something wrong with the bulb. The blue power light is still lit but the ELMO is not recognized through my projector. Any suggestions on what the problem may be?They advance differntly and the slides jam. I had to transfer more than 2000 slides from 140-carousels to 80 carousels in order to finish the job. You might try transvie trays, which work more smoothly, but you risk damaging the mechanism. The carousel is bedded down properly, so not sure what is up. Any idea? Thanks. Answer questions, earn points and help others. You shuffle into the lecture hall for your first class, along with a hundred other students. As you take a seat, near the front to make it easy to see and hear, you notice the black board. The board spans almost the width of the room but has a whole lot of space wasted by a white screen. The lecturer walks in, and before addressing the room, places a circular tray on top of a black box that seems to be plugged in, and has another cable leading to a small remote on the table. The lecturer flicks a switch on the black box and it whirs to life, shining a light across the white screen. They press a button on the remote connected to this projector, and an audible clicking sound like a camera shutter can be heard. The screen flickers black for a brief second as the slide changes, and suddenly words appear in clear focus. As the class continues, the slides on the screen are largely bullet points; talking points for the lecturer to expand upon, giving the lecture direction. There are occasional pictures on the slides, sharing detail that words alone cannot, or formula where a spelling mistake can make a big difference. The blackboard is occasionally used throughout the class as the lecturer interacts with you or the other students, putting your contribution on the board and letting it last on the blackboard until the next interaction. Still, the lecture is punctuated by the sound of the slide changing, bringing up new talking points as you diligently take notes. The first time you practice the presentation with your group you put the slides in the carousel facing up. However, when you turn the projector on and press the remote to change the slide, the picture on the screen is upside down. Once you remove the slides and take care to put them back in the correct order, you turn the projector on once again to see the fruits of your efforts. You can deftly slot the slides into the carousel, time the changing of the slides so the sound punctuates the end of a sentence instead of interrupting it, and have learned to focus the projector in case it gets moved. The class has two slide carousels so that the group that is speaking next can set up the carousel while another group is speaking. During the presentation, to help with the nerves of public speaking, you turn to regain your place by looking at the slides. Instead of having a script or cue cards in your hand, you’ve learned the content well enough that the bullet points can reset your train of thought. As a group, you take turns in speaking, covering the content of the slides and while you’re not speaking, you oversee changing the slides. Another group had their slides in the wrong order, causing them to waste time finding the correct slides during the presentation. After all the presentations were done, you eagerly awaited your mark. The notes said that there was far too much information on some of the slides. Slide projectors were first produced towards the end of the 19 th century and have developed further to this day. The carousel slide projector was developed before the times of CD-ROMs, USB flash drives, or other easy data transferral methods, so physically storing 80 slides in a space-efficient manner was the only way to easily present that many slides without breaking the flow of presentation. While slide projectors are different to movie film projectors in the way slides are produced, much of the technology is also the same. With the carousel slide loading mechanism, manually slotting in slides and refocusing was less of a problem. The Omnigraphic 253AF also comes with a remote, allowing the user to simply press a button, and move to the next slide, further reducing human error. The slide-holding carousel can be easily removed from the projector base, to be loaded up before a presentation, and can even be swapped out for another pre-loaded carousel.Changing the slides in the holder would run the risk of de-focusing the projector, making words in the slides hard to read, or an image blurry. Older slide projectors could still change slides easier than their predecessor; the magic lantern. A magic lantern worked by shining a light into a concave (bent inward) mirror, which would make a focal point through a (typically) hand painted glass slide, and would then shine onto a canvas, similar to the slide or modern projectors. In the earlier renditions of magic lanterns, the only light sources were candles, lanterns, and sunlight. However, before the inception of the slide projector, electric lamps had already been developed. Film projectors were developed at a similar time to the slide projectors, allowing for movies to be produced.Once computers were readily available, data projectors were developed to no longer need slides to be produced. The modern data projectors can have both still-slides and moving pictures within a single presentation. However, producing slides on a computer is significantly easier using software such as PowerPoint, Keynote, or even in your internet browser on Google Slides. However, modern projectors still use similar lenses, lamps, and also project on a clear space. Using a data projector for movies is also much more efficient; both in that the film reels don’t need to be replaced part way through a long video and storing the video doesn’t require lengths of film. Furthermore, with the advent of computers, and the internet, storing both pictures and movies has much less risk of damaging the data; if you spill hot coffee on some film or pictures, it can stain or ruin the picture forever, but spilling the same coffee on your computer will often have the data still being recoverable (but this is still not recommended). Teachers no longer need to spend a large portion of teaching time writing and erasing content from a black, or white board, and to discuss new content using a board does not require erasing past, potentially useful notes. Using a projector for educational purposes was not practical during the time of the magic lantern, as each slide was hand painted, and painting words in an information-dense slide would be too hard to do in a timely or readable manner. The slides for the projector were able to hold a very space-efficient amount of information; 35mm film was the standard for movies until the early 2000’s. in the same amount of space of an a4 page, you could lay out 72 slides, each showing multiple a4 pages in readable definition when projected. The information-holding capacity of film projectors was much worse, given that each reel of film showed images that happened in sequential order, and each standard movie reel (305m long) of 35mm film would only run for 11 minutes. For presenting moving images the film projectors were great, but for presenting information and still images, the slide projector was unparalleled. Projectors allowed for education to be more efficient, a new entertainment medium, and the sharing of photos or paintings. The projector shared memories and taught a generation.
